Preparation and Surface Assessment

In any successful epoxy concrete floor installation, thorough preparation is essential. This 450 square-foot 2-car garage floor underwent a comprehensive preparation process, starting with grinding down the concrete floor to open up its pores. Following this, the floor was carefully vacuumed to remove all dust and debris created during the grinding.

Fortunately, the existing expansion joints were well-placed, there was very minimal need for crack repairs. Only a few hairline cracks required attention and were promptly filled with Divot patch and sanded smooth.

High stem-walls in the garage, known for their porous nature, were cleared of any drywall mud and paint splatter using a wire brush to ensured a smooth application of the coating materials later on.

Base Coat Application

For the base coat, we opted for UPC 5800 FAST EPOXY due to its strong adhesion and durability on concrete in our epoxy concrete floor installation. This product was applied evenly over the garage floor and stem-walls at approximately 180 square feet per gallon to accommodate the larger decorative flake chips. The base coat’s slightly thicker application enabled the UPC DECORATIVE POLY CHIPS to be embedded more securely.

We started by applying the base coat on the stem-walls, allowing us to work systematically. The chips were then hand-broadcasted into the wet epoxy to achieve a seamless finish. Any chips that bounced off were collected and reapplied to ensure an even distribution and proper embedding.

Flake Application

After ensuring the base coat was evenly spread, the next step was to apply the UPC DECORATIVE POLY CHIPS. For our epoxy concrete floor installation, we broadcasted the 1-inch decorative poly chips to full rejection over the wet base coat. This approach guarantees a high level of coverage and consistency throughout the floor.

Once the base coat was covered with the decorative chips, we let it set overnight to allow the epoxy and chips to dry and bond. This provided a solid foundation for the subsequent application of the topcoat.

Recovery and Cleanup

After ensuring the base coat was evenly spread, the next step was to apply the UPC DECORATIVE POLY CHIPS. We broadcasted the 1-inch decorative poly chips to full rejection over the wet base coat. This approach guarantees a high level of coverage and consistency throughout the floor.

Once the base coat was covered with the decorative chips, we let it set overnight to allow the epoxy and chips to dry and bond. This provided a solid foundation for the subsequent application of the topcoat.

Topcoat Application

The next step was applying the UPC 7005 PREMIUM POLYASPARTIC as a topcoat. This high-performance product offers fast drying times (45-60 minutes) and exceptional chemical resistance, providing the garage floor with a glossy finish and enhanced durability.

To begin, we applied the polyaspartic topcoat on the stem-walls and then moved on to the rest of the garage floor. Our team worked efficiently to ensure an even and thorough coating.

Final Touches and Curing

After the topcoat application, the floor was left to cure for a few hours. The UPC 7005 PREMIUM POLYASPARTIC allows for light foot traffic in just 3-4 hours and full vehicle traffic in 24 hours.

With the new epoxy floor coating system installed, the 2-car garage is now modern, attractive, and with a durable finish. The combination of UPC products ensures long-lasting performance, making this garage a standout feature of the home.
